“The Universe is made of stories, not of atoms.” – Muriel Rukeyser
Sometimes life seems random, but it’s not. Everything that happens within and around you is the result of the story you live by.
In your own life, the stories you tell yourself play a central role in how things play out. Is your story a hard-knock tale of survival, hard work, and difficult obstacles?
Or is it a humble tale of simplicity and resilience in the face of life’s challenges?
Your parents told stories, too. About your future, about what might happen to you if you did X or didn’t do Y. Those stories were extensions of the stories they heard from their ancestors.
What you may not often think about is how powerful your story really is. Its energy is immense.
It moves and guides your every thought and emotion like the wind moves and guides the clouds.
And, those thoughts and emotions… They guide your biology — your cells — to manifest the physical form of that story.
Why is this significant?
Because in holistic medicine — at least the way we practice it here in our clinic — your story comes first. Your story is what matters most. That’s our primary diagnostic test.
I’m forever amazed at how many predictions are made based on lab results. Not that lab results aren’t useful and helpful.
But, lab values represent result, not source. By the time something has manifested in the chemistry, it’s been brewing in your storyline for quite some time.
Elevated lymphocytes indicate a virus. Ok, I want to know the story of what has been going on leading up to that virus. Where has that patient been? How much rest are they getting? What are they eating? How is the workload at their job? Are there any difficult people they’re allowing to wear them down? Any troubles in their family? Are they depressed or anxious or worried? For how long?
Maybe the blood test came back positive for some autoimmune markers. Again, I want to know the story of what has been going on leading up to that virus. Where has that patient been? How much rest are they getting? What are they eating? How is the workload at their job? Are there any difficult people they’re allowing to wear them down? Any troubles in their family? Are they depressed or anxious or worried? For how long?
THAT’S where you find the real root of the issue. You trace back through your story, and soon enough things begin to make sense. You find the parts of the story that created your current state.
And, you change them. You shift into a new pattern, a new story — a story of regeneration and revitalization. A story of better balance and deep nourishment of your body, mind, and Spirit.
Then, a funny thing happens. You get a different result. Thanks to your new, more hopeful, helpful story.
Holistic Medicine means “Everything” Medicine. Anything can be healing medicine, including:
- changing your attitude
- setting new limits with that overbearing boss
- removing certain foods from your diet
- drinking more water
- getting more sleep
- needles that stimulate your body’s healing response
- herbal formulas
- nutritional supplements
And, anything can be toxic and disease causing:
- unhealthy attitudes toward yourself and others
- allowing your overbearing boss to push you around
- staying in relationships that are toxic or hurtful
- eating certain foods that promote inflammation
- drinking more coffee
- getting less sleep
- herbal formulas incorrectly prescribed
- nutritional supplements taken in excess
- improperly used drugs
- unneeded or poorly performed surgery
I see people in my clinic every day who are carrying sad, angry, hurtful, grief-stricken, guilty, and shame-filled stories. Stories of “I’m being punished”, “What did I do to deserve this”, “I can’t change”, “I’m not lovable so I’m not going to leave this toxic relationship”, “I’ll always be fat”, and on and on… These stories go on in the background, outside of conscious awareness. But, they are essentially guiding your biology, your thoughts, your feelings. EVERYTHING.
The ONE thing that, in my opinion, determines the depth of your healing, is the depth of understanding of your story. That means understanding the story you are telling yourself ABOUT YOURSELF.
That, my friend, takes patience, a listening ear, and an open heart.
If you’re ready to change, to see a different result, first gain the awareness of what your story is. Then, CHANGE IT. It’s only a story, and you are the author.
